Es ist ein Sternentstehungsgebiet rund 2400 Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt. Der namensgebende Teil (IC 1396A) des Nebels wird durch eine Globule verursacht, d.h. einem Fr\u00fchstadium der Sternentstehung in denen sich Protosterne weiter verdichten bis sie hei\u00df genug sind, sodass in ihnen der Prozess der Kernfusion starten kann.
